Cognitive and Intellectual Faculties

Cognitive and Intellectual Faculties
- Dr. Ajit Sabnis

Hi.

I was on my vacation immersed in the Himalayan Splendour of Kashmir valley in the north-western parts of India- The Pir Panjal Range. Experience of a lifetime, unforgettable.

So be it! Let us get back to some serious things now!

Today, let us talk on Faculties and Skills of a child so that it can become an independent learner and engage herself more meaningfully and creatively with the world around it and come to the full flowering of its innate intelligence and understanding.

An important objective of integral education is to develop the student's Cognitive and Intellectual faculties. For this, it is necessary for parents and teachers, as primary stakeholders in education, to know as to what faculties are to be developed.

The following is a list of faculties that may be developed through project work. The list is not exhaustive and more may be added to it.

1.        Faculty of Observation:

To learn, to see, pay attention to details; of shape, form, texture, dimension, Weight, volume etc. To observe similarities and differences and learn to compare and contrast and to identify and recognize patterns.

Suggested activities: Observing the environment, the surroundings, the space in which one lives and works, objects with which one works; photography, art work, sketching and drawing by studying objects, from memory and imagination; sensorial development through games - active listening, observing details etc.

2.        Faculty of Reasoning and logic

To understand and assimilate Deduction and induction, Analysis and synthesis, Creative and critical thinking while Problem Solving. Suitable project work to be identified by teachers and parents.

3.        Faculty of Imagination

Creative pursuits like art, poetry, creative visualization and creating formations. Teachers and Parents are to encourage children to go from ‘near to far’(Please re-read the three fundamental principles of integral education already covered)

4.        Faculty of Judgment

Comparing and contrasting, Exercising power of choice, Freedom to make mistakes

5.        Faculty of intuition

By silencing mind and developing attentiveness. Importance of Silence and to go within will be covered separately.

6.        Faculty of Memory

Linkage with interest and experience, Multi -sensorial participation, Games to develop concentration and memory and developing memory by identification are some of the activities that can be taken up to enhance the memory faculty. Do not try any other advanced techniques. Every child learns by its own pace.

Have a great day!
