Eight Types of Intelligence

EIGHT TYPES OF INTELLIGENCE
- Dr. Ajit Sabnis

Hi.
Hope it is getting interesting!
And, you now believe that 'Learning is a joyful experience'
Let me talk you today about the types of intelligence children possess.

Before that, let us understand Eight Door Concept taking auditorium as an example.

We may enter the auditorium through different doors (say D1 to D8) depending one's choice and affordability (capability). All said and done, when we start watching the play or a movie, all those who have entered through different doors will focus on ONE common source (the stage or the screen).
This is exactly what it is with education and knowledge.

Children with different capabilities, different temperaments, different nature, different intelligentsia, enter the classroom and learn the same.
Will it Help ? is the question. AND it will NOT- is the answer.

True role of a teacher or a parent is to first understand from which door the child is entering and that is the door the child is comfortable with.

Today, let us understand EIGHT types of doors thru which a child can enter. This is the first step in understanding your child's fundamental nature.

1.  Logical Intelligence: Characteristics of this intelligence are : Logic, analysis, puzzle  solving, abstracts, numbers, etc.
2. Musical Intelligence: Characteristics are : Sound, rhythm, system, harmony, synergy etc.
3. Linguistic Intelligence: The knowing that occurs through the written, spoken, and read aspects of language. It uses such tools as essays, debates, public speech, poetry, formal and informal conversation, creative writing and linguistic-based humour. (riddles, pun etc)
4. Spatial intelligence :The knowing that occurs through seeing both   externally and internally. It uses such tools as : drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, montage, visualization, imagination, pretending, and creating mental images.
5. Kinesthetic Intelligence :The knowing that occurs through physical movement and performance (learning by doing). It employs such tools as dance, drama, physical games, mime, role-play, body language, physical exercise, and inventing.
6. Interpersonal intelligence: The knowing that occurs through person-to-person relating, communication, teamwork, and collaboration. It employs such tools as cooperative learning, empathy, social skills, team competitions, and group projects that foster positive interdependence.
7. Intrapersonal intelligence : The knowing that occurs through introspection, self-reflection, and “cosmic questioning” (What is the meaning of life?) It uses such tools as effective processing (of, or arising from affects or feelings), journals, thinking logs, teaching for transfer, higher-order thinking, and self esteem practices.
8. Natural Intelligence : The knowing that occurs through encounters with the natural world that involve appreciation for and understanding of the various flora and fauna, recognition of species membership, and the ability to relate to living organisms. it uses such tools as hands-on labs, field trips, sensory stimulation, and attempts to classify and comprehend natural patterns.

Teacher / Parent Tip: Once a type of intelligence in a child is identified, our effort should be to teach that child depending on the door thru which it has entered. For example, for a child with spatial intelligence, maths should be taught thru craft. Ask the child to cut a triangle, a rectangle, it will understand the shapes better.

Essentially intelligence is one. But it expresses itself based on our temperament and nature as already discussed.

In the next class we will learn about the true nature of a child.

Till then, have a good week ahead !
